Image Software

Images can be included in a web page. There are a number of factors to ensure that image use is appropriate.

  • Optimise them for faster downloading.
  • Edit or crop them to remove unnecessary content.
  • Change colour settings to improve the quality.
  • Select an appropriate image.
  • Have permission to use the image from the copyright holder.
  • Have permission to photograph the subject.
  • Save in a web format.

Software for editing images.

Most scanners or digital cameras come with basic image editing software. This is ideal for cropping and resizing images to make them suitable for the web. In addition software can be purchased or downloaded.

Gimp is open source software (no licence fee) for editing images. Gimp contains some very advanced features but is more suitable for advanced web users. Download from www.gimp.org

Inkscape is an open source vector drawing package. Inkscape allows you to draw illustrations and output them to .svg or .png image formats. This software is suitable for people with some experience of drawing packages.
